Despite the growth of e-commerce, consumers continue to value the physical experience offered by shopping centers. Traditional retail still dominates, accounting for 92% of sales, while online commerce accounts for 8% of the total.
The data also shows that weekends and after-work periods are busy times in shopping centers, together accounting for more than two-thirds of transactions. This highlights the importance of flexible working hours for the success of the Portuguese market.
With more than 368,000 people employed in shopping centers, equivalent to 7% of the national workforce, the socio-economic impact of these spaces is undeniable. Contributing significantly to economic recovery and increased private consumption, shopping centers play a vital role in the growth of Portugal's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
